Personal Interests
Dr. Pontz and his wife, Heather, live in Fairfax and enjoy travel and spending time with their two children, Eleanor and Jack. He is a former marathon runner who still enjoys staying fit with an occasional 10K race, as well as biking spin classes and swimming. He and his family are active members at Fairfax Presbyterian Church, where he has served as an elder. Through the church he has led health workshops, participated in a medical mission trip to Honduras, and occasionally taught Sunday school classes. He is an Assistant Leader with his son’s Cub Scout Pack.
Biography
Dr. Pontz has been with NOVAMED Associates since 2004 and is a board-certified internist. He graduated from Princeton University in 1991 and Temple University School of Medicine in 1995. After completing his internal medicine residency at Georgetown University Hospital and becoming board certified in 1998, he was selected to stay for an extra year as Chief Medical Resident, a teaching and administrative position for the residency program. He then worked from 1999 to 2004 on the full-time staff as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Georgetown, where he trained residents and medical students and was part of a busy outpatient practice.
Dr. Pontz has taught medical students from both University of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University at the office. He was elected to the Governor’s Council of the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Physicians between 2008 and 2014, and also served on the Board of Directors of the Medical Society of Northern Virginia from 2009 to 2010. He has been a member since 2008 of the Community Board of Medical Mutual of North Carolina, NOVAMED’s malpractice insurance company. He has been interviewed on ABC World New Tonight, NBC4 Washington Affiliate, and News Channel 8 Washington.
